- W4206452388 abstract "A large number of aquatic microorganisms can infect or parasitize humans, and these pathogens and parasites are responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most such organisms are problematic when human or animal wastes contaminate surface water supplies used for drinking, body contact, or food preparation, but some occur naturally or can infect humans by other routes of transmission, including consumption of contaminated shellfish. The magnitude of the public health threat posed by these organisms requires a comprehensive effort to identify, quantify, and remediate these problems. A subset of sentinel or indicator organisms has been identified by the U.S. EPA as representative of the widest and most serious public health threats in water. Basic characteristics and the disease-causing natures of these waterborne pathogens are described. The strategies and methods for studying these organisms and their sources are discussed, as well as risks posed by natural reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms." @default.
