- W4206538478 abstract "Summary/ConclusionWith the identification of rickettsiae and rickettsia-like pathogens as agents of emerging disease, there is increased importance in studying these organisms. The study of the rickettsiae has been greatly fostered by the application of molecular techniques and tasks once insurmountable, now have become just another routine application of “gene-jockeying.” The use of PCR has probably been the single greatest tool afforded the rickettsiologists. Single genes can now be amplified from just a few organisms allowing detection for diagnostic purposes and sources of genes for research purposes as well. The need to identify a single clone in an entire library of DNA from rickettsiae is slowly being reduced. As outlined in this brief review, applications of molecular techniques have impacted a variety of different areas of study ranging from diagnostics to the most basic research. Efforts are now under way to sequence the entire genome of certain rickettsiae. The gene sequences that may result from such projects may help unravel the mysteries surrounding the unique intracellular niche that the rickettsiae occupy. There is little doubt that molecular techniques and future refinements of these methodologies will be central to future studies encompassing a variety of disciplines in rickettsiology." @default.
