- W4206584558 abstract "The Lunar Plume Alleviation Device (Lunar PAD) project aims to ensure safe lunar landings through the creation of a landing and launch pad to mitigate plume and debris hazards. After successful prototyping in October 2021, the design has now undergone hot-fire testing with an M-class solid rocket motor. The hot-fire test included thermocouples, pressure transducers, anemometers, fiber optic sensors, and material samples testing which are compared to video, visual inspection, and simulations. The results indicate the overall successful performance of the 3D architecture while providing lessons learned towards future pad designs and testing setups. The features in the center region strongly influenced flow distribution, and the effects of radial direction and distance were both significant. The hot-fire test showed flow throughout the vents but suggested less exhaust capture than preferred, and the distribution of exposures can be used to inform future hot fire instrumentation. This paper presents a detailed account of these results and takeaways, combined with the additional lessons of manufacturing, that have the potential to greatly improve future work." @default.
