- W4206657780 abstract "The paper describes the results of an ongoing research and development program supported by the USACE Waterway Experimental Station and Designers and Planners, Inc. (BMT Group of Companies) aimed at investigating squat effects and ship maneuvering performance in restricted navigational channels. One of the main objectives of the program is to develop tools to predict a vessel’s sinkage, trim and underkeel clearance within a required engineered accuracy as a function of principal parameters of the ship and channel, presence of other vessels and ambient environmental disturbances. Hydrodynamic aspects of the problem have been examined using a variety of the analytical approaches such as 3-D modelling, strip and slender body theories, hydraulic methods and empirical results obtained from the model testing and full-scale measurements. The focus of the program is to develop reliable engineering and simulation tools to accurately predict squat and other elements of ship/environment interaction for realistic ship types in restricted channels, Ref. (1). These tools can be used by ship and port designers for optimal traffic/loads assessments as well as establishing the required safety margins for channel depths and widths for minimum channel maintenance dredging. The present paper discusses the adopted approach and tools developed to predict squat. The vertical ship motions and squat predictions are verified by model test data and full-scale measurements." @default.
