- W4206936127 abstract "Cereals and pseudo-cereals account for more than 60% of the total calorie intake globally. Although these two classes of field crops belong to different families, some of their properties and uses overlap. Notable among the cereals are maize, rice and wheat, while some of the most widely cultivated pseudo-cereals include amaranth, buck wheat and quinoa. These crops play important roles in the diets and nutrition of humans across the globe, serving as sources of carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, and vitamins, among others. With a projected increase in world's population to 9.7 billion in 2050 and the consequent requirement to increase crop production by 60%–110% to meet the food and nutritional needs of the population, both cereals and pseudo-cereals have a crucial role to play. Food systems face mounting pressure from an increasing demand, climate change impacts and land degradation hence the need to evolve to avert widespread hunger and malnutrition. Advances in breeding for stress tolerance, seed systems, post-harvest handling and storage as well as complementary good agronomic practices are a pre-requisite for the optimization of the potentials of these crops. We described selected cereals and pseudo-cereals and discussed their nutritional benefits and medicinal properties and potentials. We also examined the advances in breeding and agronomic research along with the outlooks." @default.
