The first part provides a general description of the educational system across the continent. The second part highlights efforts in physical education aimed at the promotion of healthy lifestyles, well-being, and physical activity of schoolchildren. Next, higher education institutions and sport federations are brought into the discussion by assessing the extent to which these institutions contribute to the advancement of education in sport and physical activity in Latin America. The chapter concludes with discussing challenges, trends, and future developments. Some of the challenges include the lack of access to physical education programmes for people with disabilities and the limited understanding of the importance of sport as a vehicle to support education. Current trends and future developments gravitate towards participation in physical activities that are not linked to a federal sport structure and the recent acknowledgement of sport and physical education as tools to tackle wider social problems." @default.
