- W4210244073 abstract "In April 2015, ASLO launched a new science communication internship (http://aslo.org/news/2015-aslo-science-communication-internship/). The selected interns work with the ASLO Communications Office on a variety of communication, social media, policy, education, and public outreach projects designed to provide direct experience in how science is communicated to a variety of audiences. Katie Harazin was selected as the Fall 2020/Spring 2021 ASLO Science Communication Intern. Katie is continuing to work on ASLO projects via her work with Schneider Group in managing the social media for Ocean Sciences Meeting 2022 (OSM 2022). KH: Hello, and thank you, Teresa! I have a BS in Geological Sciences, and a MS in Chemical Oceanography. I'm currently (and slowly) working towards finishing my PhD. My expertise is in the role of the ocean in modulating climate. My MS focused on modern trace metal chemistry in the Southern Ocean, while my current PhD and other previous work has focused on paleoclimate reconstruction of oceanic carbon cycling on glacial–interglacial timescales. I was originally drawn to this position due to my interest in the intersection of science and society. Professionally, I've been interested in the editing and publishing side of science, as writing and editing is my favorite part of the scientific process. More informally, I've been active on Twitter for many years. I appreciate how humor can spark interest and engagement in technical topics on social media. KH: As a scientist and researcher, I had no idea about how scientific societies worked. They were a total mystery, to be honest, so many things surprised me! What surprised me most is the sheer breadth of all the different ASLO operations, such as the journals, conferences, workshops, and other activities, and how a small team of staff and dedicated volunteer-run committees make all the magic happen. It's really inspiring seeing the enthusiasm of the ASLO community. KH: My interests have largely been in the editing and publishing aspects of science. Along these lines, I was able to participate in many ASLO meetings, including the annual “Strategy Day,” where ASLO meets with its publishing partner, Wiley. The Strategy Day allows ASLO and Wiley to discuss ways to improve and expedite the publishing process, and better serve the aquatic science community. This was the first time it was virtual, and I learned a great deal about how publishers and societies work together to better the publishing experience. I also have a personal interest in illustration and graphic design. This internship provided a rich opportunity to flex my graphic design skills via social media and in-house marketing. My biggest project was taking my experience from the ASLO-Wiley Strategy Day and creating an informational comic about the publishing process, focusing on the individual steps and the timeline for each. (It's in the November 2021 L&O Bulletin! Harazin 2021). KH: The virtual experience certainly has its pros and cons. On one hand, I do feel like I missed out on many in-person experiences typical of the internship… the in-person networking, the hands-on interaction. That's just how the cookie crumbled, though. Despite this circumstance, the virtual aspect provided many boons; aside from the obvious benefits of avoiding in-person interaction during a pandemic, I had a lot more flexibility with my hours, and did not worry about commute times. Overall, I learned a lot and connected with the ASLO community, even while being remote and part-time! KH: My role has been to help build and facilitate communication between the OSM 2022 Programming Committee and the ocean sciences community. The internship certainly prepared me for creating content to be posted by societies. In my role with Schneider Group not only am I communicating with ASLO members (as I was in the internship), but also with those of the AGU and TOS (the co-sponsors for OSM 2022). The previous experience engaging with ASLO's members has made sending out e-mails to thousands of people a little bit easier! The planning for OSM 2022 has been a wild ride, considering all the circumstances; it's made me think a lot about how societies can make remote conferences immersive and engaging, and how hybrid virtual/on-site conferences could and should function in the future. KH: Absolutely. This internship provides such a unique opportunity to apply a scientific background in areas aside from scientific research. Most importantly, it provides flexibility to pursue what you are personally interested in. Teresa Curto, Executive Director, ASLO; [email protected]" @default.
