- W4210371384 abstract "Ritter provided the first description of a respiratory illness following exposure to a sick parrot in 1879. In 1892, Morange named the disease “psittacosis,” from the word “parrot” in Greek, after an outbreak of respiratory illness in that year. investigators in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Germany isolated the causative agent of the respiratory illness, which eventually was named Chlamydia psittaci in 1930. The Chlamydiae are a gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens, and the phylum includes two genera: Chlamydia and Chlamydophila. This chapter investigates several species of Chlamydophila, such as C. pecorum, C. pneumoniae, C. psittaci; C. abortus, C. caviae, and C. felis. It analyzes how psittacosis manifests in birds as anorexia, apathy, ocular and nasal discharge, diarrhea, and conjunctivitis." @default.
