- W4210523704 abstract "In this chapter, the authors describe how, after completing a postgraduate course, Froebel Certificate in Early Childhood at Roehampton University, they developed a free-flow play project with two groups of reception-age children with autism and additional severe learning difficulties. In recent years behaviourism has made a ‘come back’ in the form of applied behaviour analysis and the discrete trial teaching approach, which focuses upon adult-directed tasks, skills-based activities with an emphasis on compliance training, verbal and physical prompts, and reinforcing the targeted behaviour to shape it. The child with autism was not an empty vessel that needed filling with skills and adult-led experiences, much like the banking concept in Friere’s ‘Pedagogy of the Oppressed’. Play settings are made up of affordances whereby real objects, and environments are given meaning by the person who perceives them. The loose parts often provided a reason to communicate and a starting point for Intensive Interaction." @default.
