- W4210671446 abstract "The taste system of vertebrates is composed of an array of peripheral, multicelluar receptor organs, termed taste buds, which are innervated by branches of specific cranial nerves, which in turn convey taste information from the periphery to the central nervous system. Each of these elements develops from separate and discrete embryonic tissues, and yet must connect during embryogenesis in order that a fully functional taste system is present as the newborn begins to feed. In the past decade, researchers have made significant advances in our understanding of the molecular, cellular, and tissue-level mechanisms driving the embryonic development of several components of this system. It is now well established that the oral epithelium destined to produce taste buds is patterned quite early in embryogenesis, as well as independently of ingrowing nerve fibers. Moreover, genes required for normal taste bud patterning have been identified. The development of taste bud innervation has also received substantial attention, such that several factors are now known to regulate proper connectivity between developing taste buds and cranial nerve fibers. Importantly, implementation of molecular genetic approaches in mice has contributed significantly to our progress, as has comparison with findings in other model developmental systems, including amphibians." @default.
