No one practicing in health care can avoid, at least tangentially, the prospect of dealing with another’s death. Most people do not like thinking or talking about death. It is an emotional topic, one that evokes fear and anxiety. For practitioners in hospice, long-term care, or oncology, death is a daily occurrence—“business as usual.” Some practitioners may never confront an actively dying patient. References1. DeGrazia D.
