Simulation-based education mimics clinical situations that demand collaboration among the healthcare providers, requiring students to engage in collaborative decision-making. This study compared the outcomes of two interprofessional discharge meeting simulations that were completed using these two formats: in-person versus video-conferencing. Outcomes on the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale-9A (ISVS-9A) were compared between the 2 formats and open-ended survey questions were qualitatively analyzed. A 2-way ANOVA revealed that ISVS-9A scores on were higher for the video-conferencing group (p = 0.018) compared to the in-person group. Inductive qualitative analysis to open-ended questions post-simulation identified themes from each group, and found no differences between the groups. Both groups gained knowledge related to roles of the professions involved, improved their communication skills, and recognized the value of interprofessional collaboration. Students gained a greater understanding of patient-centered care, and found the experiences beneficial to their preparation for clinical work. This study demonstrates that video-conferencing simulation is an effective alternative to in-person simulation of an interprofessional meeting." @default.
