- W4210947101 abstract "Researchers in Leisure Studies know that for most people, most of the time, leisure takes place within and around the home and usually occurs with members of their family and close friends (Bhatti and Church, 2000; Clarke and Critcher, 1985; Horna, 1994; Rojek, 1985; Veal and Lynch, 2001). This has come to be known as the privatization thesis and has been stated in various ways, some of which emphasize home-centredness more so than family-centredness, but all capture the idea that in contemporary society, family and friendship-based home-life has taken precedence over leisure in the public sphere (Allan and Crow, 1991). In general proponents of the thesis argue that compared to earlier historical periods, people give priority to home-centred or domestic leisure rather than seeking communal leisure experiences and sociability in public places. Several factors related to the organization of modern capitalist society have been identified as contributing to the privatization of leisure. These factors include innovative and mass produced micro-electronic home entertainment equipment (Rojek, 1985), fear of crime in public spaces and ‘higher material standards, greater geographical mobility, more leisure time, and less hierarchical familial ideologies’ (Allan and Crow, 1991: 19). Allan and Crow (ibid.) argue that the privatization thesis has been overstated (see also Allan and Crow, 1989), in that not all family members have private space within the home, and most people enjoy a greater diversity in leisure settings and companions than simply the home and immediate family members." @default.
