• W4210962975 abstract "Laser shock peening (LSP) is an increasingly advancing surface processing technology for improving failure resistance in alloyed components. Surface roughness, a secondary, non-beneficial outcome of LSP is inimical to the fatigue life of components like turbine blades, which are exposed to millions of low or high stress cycles. It provides spots for amplification of stresses, origination of corrosion and erosion, and generation of localized flow turbulence regions. Using experimentally validated 3-D finite elements modelling and numerical optimization methods, this paper presents the parametric investigation of the optimum combination of peening parameters that minimizes surface roughness when X12Cr steel, a common material used in manufacturing turbine blades, is subjected to LSP. Optimum peening parameters have been obtained and the hierarchy of influence of each of the LSP inputs variables on surface roughness have been proffered. These can effectively minimize the degree of roughness resulting from applying LSP and enhance its overall objective which is to increase resistance to fatigue and other related failures in materials." @default.
