• W4210971490 abstract "Urban geochemistry lies at the interface of environmental science and low temperature geochemistry and attempts to understand (1) the influence of urbanization on Earth's systems and subsequent impact on human and ecosystem health and (2) the sources, transport, transformations, and fate of chemical constituents in urban environments. The urban geochemical environment can be more challenging to study than non-urban areas because of the complicated interactions of the various types of media, sources, transport, pathways, and inorganic and organic chemicals. Research is both basic and applied and includes the study of legacy environmental issues. Here we present four examples of on-going research areas; (1) the legacy of lead in the environment from smelters, leaded gasoline, etc., (2) hazards of road runoff from vehicular pollution that includes petroleum products, combustion by-products, and metals from the breakdown engine and body parts and wear from brakes and tires, (3) salinization of surface waters from road deicers such as halite (NaCl), and (4) emerging contaminants of concern such as pesticides, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and nano plastics. It is thought that by 2050, as many as 9.7 billion humans will live in urban areas, potentially increasing the risk to human and ecosystem health. To address this risk, an interdisciplinary approach is needed that involves collaboration amongst environmental geochemists, ecologists, medical/public health professionals, engineers, politicians, and city planners." @default.
