- W4210974312 abstract "Mycoses are almost always conditioned in occurrence by some pre-existing, nonfungal ailment — a predisposing condition that in some way disables one or more host defense mechanisms. Thus, mycoses are facilitated by abrogation of mechanical barriers (maceration of the skin, burns, major surgical operations), immunodeficiencies (malignancies and their treatments; transplantation of organs and antirejection therapies; the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]), metabolic derangements (diabetes mellitus; hypercorticism), and suppression of competitor microorganisms (application of multiagent antibacterial therapy). Possibly because they are often not amenable to correction, immunodeficiencies appear to be the most important contributors to the current burgeoning of the deep mycoses. Indeed, immunodeficient patients with deep mycoses highlight the need for agents that are perorally and parenterally administrable, systemically active, nontoxic, and fungicidal. Currently available drugs fall short of these ideal characteristics. However, it is useful to consult recent reviews of antifungal chemotherapy [1–3] and assess the current situation in this chapter as we work toward optimal antifungal chemotherapy." @default.
