There was a time when the inconsistent expression blue jaundice was applied to the same manifestation. To physicians the word cyanosis probably suggests a disorder characterized by malformation of the heart or some other pathologic condition leading to imperfect arterialization of the blood; hence the latter retains a venous hue. Such cyanosis usually is attributed to an increase in the oxygen unsaturation of the blood to a certain value. Sometimes the bluish color characteristic of a cyanotic condition is confined to some small part of the body.
