- W4211009928 abstract "This chapter presents a collection of topics related to desiccation crack formation. These are mainly recent developments and currently fields of active research. We discuss the effects of electric and magnetic fields and other external parameters, which may be used to produce tailor-made crack patterns. Various methods of designing crack resistant materials by tuning elastic or rheological properties, or by forming composites are then discussed. We also present some positive applications of crack patterns – such as using them as a diagnostic tool to characterize bio-fluid samples in medical tests or as a patterning technique in nano-fabrication for micro-technology applications. Finally, we explore some applications of desiccation fracture to geophysics. Columnar jointing in lavas, such as the Giant's Causeway, is a centuries-old problem in geomorphology. We show how experiments in drying starch, which also forms columns, can explain the scaling of columnar joints. Further, we show how such hexagonal crack patterns, which are also seen in permafrost soils, mud-puddles, and crocodiles, may arise from the dynamic evolution of a planar crack network." @default.
