- W4211015280 abstract "Since time immemorial, fungi as with most organisms from other kingdoms have evolved to utilize glucose as their main carbon source for their survival. The preference of utilizing glucose over other carbon compounds is related to the high abundance of glucose found in nature and also due to the flexibility of glucose molecule being converted to other forms to be used as food storage. Although being the most abundant carbohydrate, medically important fungi develop the ability to also metabolize other carbon compounds to increase their likelihood of survivability in the hostile human host environment. This article presents an overview of glucose and other alternative carbon sources metabolism by medically important fungi with minor reference to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It also touches on the relationship of these metabolic pathways with their pathogenicity and ends with a brief mention on the potential of manipulating them to address the issues with regards to fungal infections." @default.
