- W4211016334 abstract "This chapter covers heterocycles containing two fused 5-membered rings with one bridgehead nitrogen atom and two extra heteroatoms in the same ring, with a focus on the literature from 2007 to 2019. In the first part of the chapter a brief classification of the different bicyclic systems will be proposed based on the structure of their parent (fully-saturated) compounds. Recent theoretical works on the properties of these systems will then be described. Experimental structural methods will also be discussed, with a particular focus on proton and heteronuclear (13C, 11B, 31P, 15N or 29Si) NMR spectroscopic investigations. Thermodynamic aspects related to the aromaticity or stability of different bicyclic structures will be briefly outlined. In the second part of this review, the reactivity of various heterocycles will be presented, starting from that of fully conjugated rings. The behavior of non-conjugated compounds will be discussed next. In this case, the diverse transformations will be categorized according to the nature of the first reacting atom (phosphorus, carbon, sulfur or nitrogen atom). The description of few transformations involving substituents attached to either carbon atoms or heteroatoms of the ring systems will conclude this section. The synthesis of the heterocycles by cyclizations, condensation reactions, inter- and intramolecular dipolar cycloadditions or via the transformation of other heterocyclic compounds will be outlined next. Finally, some examples of 5,5-fused bicyclic systems possessing interesting synthetic or biological properties will be presented." @default.
