- W4211041623 abstract "Cancer treatment is a rapidly changing and evolving area involving multiple diagnostic and therapeutic modalities to achieve the most optimal outcome. This chapter provides the owner with enough information to help them make an informed choice regarding the best treatment pathway for their companion. Staging diagnostics are essential components for preoperative assessment of veterinary oncologic patients. The first decision in the surgical planning in removing a tumor is to determine the “surgical dose.” Veterinary surgical oncology has traditionally followed the adage that for most malignant solid tumors, a 2–3 cm surgical margin and an additional tissue plane deep is the desired intraoperative goal to achieve wide excision. The veterinary oncologic patient has several risk factors that may increase the frequency of complications associated with wound healing. The time to discuss the potential need for adjuvant therapy in a tumor patient is prior to any surgical intervention." @default.
