- W4211043022 abstract "Filtration technology has progressed from early attempts using sand, gravel and cinders to today's membrane filters which are capable of removing microorganisms and sterilizing pharmaceutical products. Although sieve retention during filtration is crucial, depth filtration also plays an important role. Sterilizing grade filters (≤0.22 μm nominal pore size) remove bacteria and moulds, but not necessarily viruses, prions and endotoxins. Membranes with smaller nominal pore sizes are commercially available, but are not routinely used in the manufacture of sterile products unless a specific risk factor is identified. As well as sterilization, filters are used in a number of other applications, including clean rooms and bacterial enumeration. The integrity of the filter is very important and specific tests such as bubble point and dispersed oil particulate (DOP) test can be utilized during validation." @default.
