- W4211091393 abstract "Thrombosis occurs with the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, resulting in the obstruction of the flow of blood through the circulatory system. Blood clots are a major cause of heart attacks and ischemic strokes, both being a consequence of restricted blood flow. The prevention of platelet aggregation and clot formation can therefore be lifesaving and drugs for this objective are of great value. Clopidogrel has been demonstrated to be extremely potent whilst having low levels of side effects. This chapter illustrates how research carried out in the pharmaceutical industry towards the production of the active pharmaceutical ingredient and worldwide sales of the finished drug product evolved. It discusses Clopidogrel structure and general retrosynthetic strategy, the first reported synthesis of Clopidogrel, and evolution of the chemical synthesis of Clopidogrel. For a molecule of the size and with the features of Clopidogrel, several synthetic routes will be applicable to its commercial production." @default.
