- W4211163902 abstract "The term “hyposplenism” was introduced to describe the condition that follows splenectomy (Eppinger, 1913), and its use was extended subsequently to include states of impaired splenic function, regardless of etiology (Schilling, 1924; Dameshek, 1955). Although hyposplenism is most commonly caused by splenectomy, it may also result from agenesis or atrophy of the spleen, or may be functional. The concept of functional hyposplenism arose from the observation that Howell-Jolly bodies can occur in the red blood cells of the peripheral blood of patients with no prior history of splenectomy, and whose spleens are of normal size or even enlarged (Pearson etal., 1969). Furthermore, in some conditions, the hematological features are transient, indicating that hyposplenism may be reversible (Lockwood etal., 1979). Customarily, hyposplenism has been detected by hematological, rather than immunological, methods, the principal hallmark of the hyposplenic state being the presence of Howell-Jolly bodies in the red blood cells of the peripheral blood (see Subheading 2.1).KeywordsSystemic Lupus ErythematosusCeliac DiseaseCoeliac DiseasePneumococcal VaccineAccessory SpleenThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
