- W4211252942 abstract "The nonrenewable and environment-threatening character of fossil fuels and overall waste generation is leading to a paradigm shift from fossil fuel refineries to waste biorefineries. Successful examples include the microbial conversion of mostly food waste into biogas, volatile fatty acids, and compost and waste oil to biodiesel. Considering the facilities available, using, e.g., wastes and food-competing substrates, there is capacity to diversify the processes by including different waste materials and consequently producing new products. In addition to waste management and overall economic and environmental footprint improvement of the industrial sector, this integration strategy can lead to faster development of waste biorefineries in view of related lower investment costs. This chapter provides an overview of the established waste biorefineries and strategies of waste integration. Committed incentives from policy makers and the construction of direct communication bridges between academia and industry are crucial for the global expansion of waste biorefineries." @default.
