- W4212933900 abstract "New treatments, a change in public attitude to mental health care and greater access to psychological therapies have improved mental health care in the last two decades. The current state of mental health in the UK Armed Forces has been discussed recently in this journal [1]. The Operational Mental Health Patient Care Pathway (OMHPCP) provides a structure for delivering mental health care on military operations. The importance of good leadership in preventing adverse mental health outcomes in the workplace has been increasingly recognized [2]. This editorial outlines the role of the Chain of Command (CoC) as the employer, and medical staff, in the prevention, assessment and treatment of mental illness on operations via the OMHPCP. Serving in the armed forces can have beneficial effects on mental health but service personnel (SP) may be exposed to potentially traumatic events. Factors which influence the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a proportion of those exposed to traumatic events include individual vulnerabilities and environmental aspects. The individual vulnerabilities are addressed, in part, by selection of personnel prior to joining. The environmental aspects are addressed by the actions of military health services and by the CoC, which has a vital role in the prevention of illness and promotion of psychological fitness before, during and after an operation." @default.
