- W4213030542 abstract "Cardiac surgery outcome in terms of mortality have continually improved as a result of the development of less traumatic heart-lung machines, minimally invasive valve surgery techniques, more effective myocardial protection strategies, and improved perioperative care. Percutaneous coronary interventions with stents offer outcomes similar to coronary artery bypass graft surgery in many patients, and transcatheter aortic valve implantations exceed the number of isolated open surgical aortic valve replacements in many developed economies. Elderly patients must be assessed individually in terms of the natural history of their cardiac disease, symptoms, current quality of life, and risk versus benefit of any potential surgical intervention and the effects and prognosis of competing comorbid diseases prevalent in the elderly. Patients presenting with coronary artery disease today, regardless of age, are broadly managed in two streams: those presenting acutely with an acute coronary syndrome and those with non-acute stable coronary artery disease." @default.
