- W4213089487 abstract "The risk of acute venous thromboembolism (VTE), defined as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), increases with age, and almost 60% of all VTE events occur in people older than 65. The most probable explanation for the greater incidence of VTE in the elderly is the higher prevalence of acquired, and often combined, risk factors for VTE, such as cancer, stroke, heart failure, immobilization, and history of VTE. The symptoms and clinical signs of VTE are often more discrete and less sensitive and specific in the elderly, presumably because of their higher prevalence of concomitant pulmonary or cardiac diseases. Patients with an episode of provoked VTE should benefit from three to six months of full-dose anticoagulation. Almost all the data on bleeding in elderly patients are derived from cohort studies in which patients are on VKAs." @default.
