Punky’s nervous—she doesn’t usually like to meet new people—but Grandma sends her off with “magical brave glasses” and a reminder to share her aloha by being helpful, giving, and brave. She’s barely out the door before she hears a plaintive “oink,” and a mother pig requests her help getting some spilled mangoes back to her piglets. It’s the perfect opportunity to share her aloha, and, remembering her magical brave glasses, Punky loads up her skateboard and delivers the yummy fruit to the hungry little ones. Continuing her journey, she meets a bee in need of a confidence boost, so she gifts it with a pollen-filled lei (given to her by the pigs), and when she crashes into the son of the market’s owner, she soothes his cut with honey (given to her by the bee). She’s in turn thanked by the owner with the butter she was hoping for. The book has a storytime-ready structure with Punky’s three stops, and the “helpful, giving, brave” setup established by Grandma’s aloha provides predictability, encouraging young viewers to guess what might happen next. A bold palette of verdant greens and rich teals set against warm golds and browns easily evokes the island setting, while curvy, exaggerated figures and simple, linear compositions give the digital art an airy effortlessness. With her messy topknot, flip-flops, and skateboard, bespectacled Punky is an utterly charming protagonist, and her narration moves effectively from early anxiousness to confident triumph.
