- W4213142933 abstract "Yet during the reign of James VI feuding was found in the Scottish burghs, involving their inhabitants both as active participants and as reluctant bystanders. Even more common than conflicts of this type, in which the burgh had some stake in the outcome, were those in which they acted as little more than arenas for the feuds of landed kindreds and dependencies. The commissioners of five burghs, including two from Edinburgh, were present at the convention in June 1598 which passed the important 'Act anent Feuds', but they were a very small minority in a body which was predominantly landed and noble. Scottish burghs were not bloody, violent places where feud incessantly raged. How criminally violent the burghs were is unknown, but whatever the level of violent crime was, it was not greatly added to by feuding. That point was also borne in mind when the rural elites brought their own feuds into burghs." @default.
