- W4213309944 abstract "Environmental shocks and stressors, such as natural disasters or interannual temperature and precipitation variability can affect fertility outcomes through a variety of pathways, including those characterized by socioeconomic, nutrition, or health indicators. This chapter broadly examines the research linking environmental correlates with outcomes related to human fertility. These outcomes include: union formation, fertility desires, family planning use, early pregnancy loss, live births, preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. In general, climatic conditions favorable for agriculture or natural resource based-livelihoods increase the likelihood of giving birth to healthy babies. However, there is a great deal of spatial and temporal variability underlying environment-fertility interactions, indicating the strong importance of understanding biological, social, economic, and cultural mechanisms that can influence such relationships." @default.
