Significant uncertainty remains about the basic state of water resources in the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush (HKHK) mountains, but melting glaciers, loss of seasonal snow, and changes in precipitation pose significant risks to regional water resources and will only get worse. In addition to threats from global climate change, the amount of black carbon (BC) produced and circulated within the region not only decreases the reflectance of the glacier surface, which increases the absorption of solar radiation, but also raises air temperatures, which increases glacier melt. Regional cooperation can prove an effective transboundary solution, helping countries in the HKHK to manage glaciers and related natural assets collaboratively by curbing BC emissions and greenhouse gases (GHGs) through clean energy sources. Managing water resources remains key; if current rates of glacial retreat continue, some higher-elevation areas could soon experience altered water flows.
