- W4214625159 abstract "Central MessageThe true value of receiving an AATS Foundation award has implications beyond the award itself.See Article page 282.In this edition of JTCVS Open, Aranda-Michel and colleagues1Aranda-Michel E. Luketich J.D. Rao R. Morell V.O. Arnaoutakis G.J. Kilic A. et al.The effect of receiving an award from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Foundation.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg Open. 2022; 10: 282-289Scopus (2) Google Scholar examine the relationship between receiving either a research scholarship or a surgical investigator award from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS). Specifically, they took the list of awardees for a specified time period and looked at their subsequent publication and citation record, the National Institutes of Health funding, and academic promotion. They found that this group did very well in all categories examined and thus conclude that receiving such an award “positions early-career cardiothoracic surgeons for a promising future in academic surgery.”There is no doubt that these awards are very valuable and helpful to the receiving individuals. In selected circumstances, they facilitate work that indeed may provide opportunities not otherwise available, leading to a successful career in academic surgery. However, several issues remain in question. Are the awards simply a marker of an individual's motivation, resources, and mentorship? How often do they in fact provide opportunities that may not exist? What is the outcome for those who apply but are not granted an award? Do the awards foster a career in academic surgery or are those who get to this point resolved to pursue such a career regardless? Much of this might be addressed in true research fashion by the addition of a comparison group in the analysis, a point conceded by the authors. The comparison group may not only be those who applied for the award, but the cohort of young academic surgeons as a whole. Unfortunately, with the available methods, this is not possible. It is also important to note that although the inference is related to academic careers as a whole, the analysis is skewed toward research. As mentioned in the article, academic efforts typically include activity in education, service, as well as research. With citations and funding, research tends to be a much more quantifiable activity. However, not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.2Cameron W.B. Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking. Random House, New York1963Google ScholarRegardless, this study does demonstrate the association these awards have with early academic success, as measured by contributions to the literature, obtaining additional funding, and academic promotion. They and others like them are worthy of our continued support. The true value of receiving an AATS Foundation award has implications beyond the award itself.
