- W4214695111 abstract "AbstractAfrica continues to face multiple uncertainties, whether climate disruption, food insecurity, conflict or migration flows. The dominant narrative is one of doom and gloom, disaster and catastrophe. The aid and investment response is to stabilize and control in order to reinstate a manageable status quo, while emergencies override normal routines, imposing securitized solutions. In this essay, I ask if there are alternatives to this dominant approach to development in Africa that foster ‘convivial development’ – one that embraces uncertainty, ambiguity and even ignorance. Drawing on examples of responses to food insecurity in southern Africa, drought in pastoral East Africa and Ebola in West Africa, I argue that Africa is frequently ahead of the game in constructing alternatives from the margins. Further, the Global North, also confronting the multiple uncertainties of a turbulent world – including the COVID-19 pandemic – should start learning from Africa, thus reversing the flow of development thinking and practice." @default.
