- W4214750056 abstract "Humans and weeds share a long history over which various technologies have been employed to manage weeds. Because weeds are still a very serious issue in the twenty-first century, it is clear that the persistence of weeds represents a daunting combination of challenges. The invention of synthetic herbicides, which diminished the labor component of agriculture, has long been associated with and contributed greatly to weed management, yet widespread herbicide resistance has highlighted the ability of weeds to persist despite herbicide technology. Perennial growth in many weed species and the formation of persistent seedbanks in many others help drive persistence. Other important factors include prolific seed production, dispersal adaptations, seed dormancy, and seed longevity. Weed persistence is actually enhanced via numerous agronomic practices as weeds adapt to these practices. It is crucial to model weed population dynamics better and develop a sound understanding of how weeds evolve in response to agronomic practices. Greater knowledge of factors like weed seed predation, microbial activity, and allelopathy would also be valuable. With globalization and global climate change, invasive weeds are infesting many new environmentally and economically important ecosystems and becoming persistent despite our best efforts. Ultimately, the best strategy against weed persistence is to understand the root cause of plants evolving weedy traits and to try to create conditions where plants with these traits will not evolve or flourish easily. However, this is much easier said than done, and further research on the many factors contributing to weed persistence is greatly needed." @default.
