- W4214902994 abstract "Pitting corrosion observed on 304L stainless steel pipes transporting water led us to suspect considerable induction or acceleration of corrosion processes due to the development of microorganisms. Discriminant experiments were carried out to quantitatively determine the extent of purely physico-chemical processes compared with purely biological processes. An experimental pilot loop, working with two identical and independent. 30 L circuits, was built to monitor electrochemical measurements and to characterise the biofilm. One circuit was fed with natural surface water (river water with high chloride content); the other with the same, but sterilised river water. The whole range of contact conditions encountered under real conditions (stagnation, flow and water renewal) was investigated, by means of the loop geometry (vertical, horizontal and oblique zones, enabling immersed areas, temporarily immersed areas, and dead zones to be simulated). The surface condition of the stainless steels covered a wide range of observed cases: soldered and unsoldered zones, as-received and passivated surfaces. The 300 day experiment was characterised by cycle simulations (6 in total), including flow, stagnation and renewal of circuit water (10% in each cycle). Besides electrochemical and biofilm characterisation measurements, the analytical monitoring of circuit water enabled variations due to bacterial growth or to corrosion to be shown. At the end of the experiment, a complete dismantling of both circuits enabled a visual comparison to be made of the surfaces affected by corrosion deposits and biofilm, in the non-sterile and sterile circuits. A similar comparison was made between the electrochemical and micro-biological measurements in the sterile and non-sterile circuits. Corrosion was clearly more prevalent in the presence of biological activity." @default.
