- W4214920278 abstract "Neurological disorders have emerged as the leading cause of disability and death worldwide over the past three decades, particularly in the low and middle-income countries, and further increases are expected globally because of population growth and aging. However, there is a global shortage of trained manpower and neurological care services are already overstretched or nonexistent in some places. Novel measures to reduce this service gap are therefore needed urgently. Chatbots, also known as conversational agents, are artificial intelligence (AI)-powered programs created to simulate human conversation via text or speech. Chatbots have achieved widespread use in various marketing applications: (1) to guide consumers through e-commerce websites, (2) act as personal guides (concierges) to support internet navigation, (3) answer frequently asked questions related to services, and (4) provide consumer advice. In the age of “digital” health care, chatbots or “healthbots” are being increasingly used (1) to provide personalized health and therapy information to patients, (2) suggest relevant products and services to patients, and (3) to provide automated appointment management service between doctors and patients. However, AI-powered chatbots or intelligent systems have the potential to be used beyond these limited roles: (1) to triage patients, (2) to provide diagnoses based on patient symptoms, (3) to recommend and guide treatments, and (4) to provide follow-up and virtual monitoring. However, to be routinely used in neurological care, chatbots should be able to increase the accuracy of diagnosis, improve the speed of decision-making, and add precision to individual patient care, and there are certain technical and legal hurdles that need to be overcome to achieve that reality. This chapter introduces chatbots, outlining different technical approaches and the history of their use in neurology. It also explores the limitations of chatbots, ethical and legal considerations, and reflects on possible future developments." @default.
