- W4214935555 abstract "Between the late 1970s and early 1980s, a debate developed in the pages of a prestigious Italian academic journal, “Quademi storici”, a debate which called into question the teaching of history in secondary schools and its relation to research. Edoardo Grendi criticised the textbooks used in Italian schools for being the cause of a widespread “shared convention in understanding the past”, that is to say a series of simplifications and received ideas which bore no relation to the critical vision of history studied in universities. While the methods and materials vary as between historiography, on the one hand, and the predictive sciences such as sociology, economics and political economy, on the other, in the collective imagination both past and future are on the same continuum, contiguous and inseparable. Grendi suggested that the history curriculum should focus on all those subjects opened up to research by the “new history”, aware that the result would be the destruction of the existing synthesis." @default.
