- W4220769999 abstract "On Feb 24, John McConnell, our editor-in-chief, sadly passed away. John's death has come unexpectedly and too soon, and we all feel disorientated and lost without his gentle guidance. At the moment, it is difficult to think of The Lancet Infectious Diseases without John's clarity of vision. John had worked for The Lancet group since 1990, first as a peer-review editor and then as the first editor of The Lancet website in 1996. He then became the editor-in-chief of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, which published its first issue in August, 2001, and was at the helm of the journal for over 20 years, taking it from a new journal publishing only reviews to the leading journal in clinical infectious diseases it is now. Just last August, we had celebrated our 20 year anniversary, a moment of great pride for John. Over the years, probably also because his extensive experience as a rower, John had steered the journal over troubled waters generated by international controversies on infectious disease management and priorities. John was convinced that talking about health and infectious diseases was political and the journal should not be afraid to take a position; he always defended the values of inclusion and fairness that we all stand for at the journal. Over his years in The Lancet group, John mentored and promoted the development of many editors who are now in positions of responsibility both within The Lancet group and in other places. John always had the capacity to give trust to those working around him, and believing they could deliver on all fronts independently from their experience, background, and position. We have all benefitted from his trust and blossomed under his benign gaze into more confident editors. John was also incredibly open to the opinions of everyone who wanted to contribute to a discussion at work and treated everyone with respect. He was very supportive of the team in The Lancet Infectious Diseases and other editors he had helped along their career path, and we have been inundated with expressions of condolences for his premature departure. This is a testimony of the great fondness John had generated around the world with his work and friendly attitude. Finding ourselves suddenly without John, we need to reflect on what The Lancet Infectious Diseases has been so far and what it should be in the coming years. It is more than ever evident that each journal is shaped by and takes the personality of its editors. A journal would not exist without the enormous contribution that authors and reviewers bring, but the identity, the objectives, the capacity to reach different readers, and the clarity of vision comes from its editor-in-chief. John brought all these elements to The Lancet Infectious Diseases and it is his legacy that we, however inadequate we may feel now, must make an effort to carry forward. John strongly believed that the quality of the work was the essential factor that made anything worth publishing in our journal. It never mattered if an author was an international leader in the field or a young researcher from a low-income country; what they were presenting and how well their work was done was what mattered. At the same time, John was extremely fair and often quoted Voltaire's “Don't let perfect be the enemy of good”, so he was aware that in many instances research could not be conducted in optimal conditions or with the best resources but that did not reduce its value. Another quality of John's that we will try to keep at the core of the journal is his genuine interest and excitement for what was being submitted and the clear idea that it is our responsibility to cover all topics in infectious diseases and not just the trendy ones. It is a testimony to John's work during the COVID-19 pandemic that our journal always managed to publish issues with a majority of articles on diseases other than COVID-19, even if our submission queue was largely dominated by the pandemic. John's sense of humour and capacity to cheer everyone up with anecdotes about working for the past 30 years in The Lancet group will be sorely missed and our London office already feels empty without John. His happiness in welcoming colleagues and authors in his office for a chat was genuine and endearing. In the past days, as the news of John's death has spread, we have felt the warmth and support of the infectious disease community around us and that is giving us strength. The best tribute we can now pay to John, is making sure that The Lancet Infectious Diseases continues to be a strong voice to make a difference in the lives of all those affected by infectious diseases. Looking back and looking aheadThe October issue marks the first issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases with our new Editor-in-Chief, Ursula Hofer, on the team. Publishing a journal is a group effort, from both the editorial team and the members of the wider production and support teams. More importantly, a journal relies on and must serve its authors, peer reviewers, and readers, and hopefully also influence wider society through policy and advocacy. So, commenting here on personnel changes in the team might seem self-absorbed. Full-Text PDF" @default.
