It defines social and emotional development, and its importance for supporting academic and behavioral adjustment. Children who exhibit positive social-emotional development are those who get along well with their peers and with adults. The chapter discusses common approaches to social-emotional learning (SEL) interventions with a focus on programs delivered in school settings. It addresses three common elements of SEL curriculum-based interventions including direct instruction to students; teacher training to support fidelity of implementation; and complementary parent education. Strategies for providing direct instruction of social-emotional skills include teacher-led group discussions, teacher modeling of new skills, student role playing or practice, and opportunities for transfer of learning throughout school day. Children's language and communication ability appears to play a role in the extent to which they benefit from an intervention." @default.
