- W4220797867 abstract "This chapter describes the traditional institution of Daikho, the ritualization of sacred space practiced by the Dimasa people of northeast India. Daikho, regarded as the abodes of local or clan deities, are also known as sacred groves, due to their forest cover and rich biodiversity. Unlike the sacred groves of central India, where temple-like structures designate a site’s religious importance, the Daikhos contain only terra cotta icons fabricated during rituals conducted after the clearance of wild understory vegetation. Taboos and restrictions governing Daikhos include the prohibition of females from entering the space; thus, they are exclusively male ritual spaces. As a female researcher, the author describes how she navigates the field to learn more about the Dimasa construction of space. The author describes the spatiality of Dimasa cosmology, which holds that land is not a homogeneous surface but rather a segmented space based on essential conditions and qualities of the sacred and profane. The Daikho is a byproduct of the segregation of sacred and profane spaces as they relate to essential differences manifested by spiritual-material entities in time and space. These differences relate to the Dimasa’s unique mode of lineage descent, which constitutes the cosmological foundation of their socio-ecological relationships." @default.
