- W4220850032 abstract "Due to their low undrained shear strength and compressibility, soft soils are considered problematic. Numerous methods, including the addition of fibers, shredded rubber tires, and geosynthetics, have been used to increase the shear strength. The present study investigated the addition of magnetic particles and the use of a magnetic field to rotate the orientation of the particles in order to increase the shear strength of soft soil. Laponite, a transparent material, was used to simulate the geotechnical properties of soft soil and to visualize the magnetic particles’ rotation. The addition of magnetic particles increased the undrained shear strength significantly. By applying a controllable electromagnet to the transparent soil specimen and creating a magnetic field around it, the magnetic particles can be rotated by controlling the current. Overall, this study’s findings indicated that adding magnetic particles to soft soil improved its shear strength." @default.
