- W4220866182 abstract "Medial prefrontal cortex (MPC) has been associated with a wide range of cognitive functions; however, its specific role in interference control is not fully understood. The current study investigates the role of MPC in interference control by externally stimulating it with an electric current and studying associated behavioral and neurophysiological markers. Participants randomly assigned to experimental and sham groups were administered with a high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) of 2 mA for 15 min. They performed a classic color-word Stroop task before, during, and immediately after the stimulation, while electroencephalography (EEG) was acquired throughout the experiment. A decrease in reaction time (RT) for incongruent and neutral trials of the Stroop task was observed in the experimental group compared to the sham group with a significant reduction in the Stroop Effect after stimulation; however, no significant change was observed in the amplitude and latency of N200, P200, and N450 event related potentials. Furthermore, the resting state complexity of the neural signals in the medial frontal region was decreased in the experimental group with a decrease in theta frequency band during the Stroop task. We conclude that the stimulation of MPC increases its efficiency in resolving the conflict by reducing theta power during the Stroop task, which is also reflected in the reduced complexity in the resting state EEG. (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04318522)." @default.
