- W4220896913 abstract "In 2018–19, National Gallery Singapore and the nearby ArtScience Museum co-presented the exhibition Minimalism: Space. Light. Object. 1 The exhibition's intention was to introduce local audiences to American Minimal and Post-Minimal art—which had not been shown in Southeast Asia before—by tracing its emergence, development and contemporary legacies through a selection of defining works. At the same time, it aimed to reposition this tendency, so closely associated with 1960s New York, within an expanded international network of artistic explorations of the relations between art object, space, and viewer from the 1950s to the present. By representing Minimalism in this way, the exhibition demonstrated the widespread and varied expressions of its central ideas, including strategies of seriality and repetition, the use of industrial materials, the challenge to modernist categories of painting and sculpture, and the analysis of the dynamics between the artwork and its site of display. To this end, it focused primarily on the three-dimensional object and its interaction with space, rather than including minimalist painting, for instance. The broad impact and interdisciplinary nature of minimalist practices were indicated by the incorporation of several examples of minimalist music, dance, film, and architecture into the exhibition and its accompanying programs. Lastly, in holding the exhibition in Singapore, a central motivation—and what this chapter will examine—was to consider Minimalism from Asian and cross-cultural perspectives, from the unique point of view of a Southeast Asian museum. This included exploring the influence of Asian philosophies such as Zen Buddhism on many American artists; acknowledging the presence of Asian artists in the 1960s New York scene; and profiling Asian artists elsewhere who worked with related ideas, either in dialogue with American Minimalism and Post-Minimalism, or in parallel (Figure 5.1)." @default.
