- W4220899207 abstract "Sheep are extensively used in biomedical research as models for human disease. Despite the widespread use of sheep and goats in research, some variation exists for normal hematologic reference intervals due to differences in methods of restraint, blood collection, laboratory methodologies, and physiologic factors such as age, reproductive status, and breed. Blood collection is accomplished with the animal restrained in a standing position or tipped onto the hind quarters. Blood for hematologic analysis is obtained from the jugular vein. Changes in the leukon are often evaluated for evidence of inflammation. Ovine and caprine platelets are small compared to other domestic species, with mean diameters of 2.6 and 2.2 μm, respectively, and, in the goat, a mean volume of 4.2 fL. In the commercial setting, bone marrow collection from sheep and goats for diagnostic purposes occurs infrequently. Erythrocytosis due to neoplasia has been reported in a sheep with cholangiocellular carcinoma." @default.
