Antilock braking (ABS) principles and technology are described, and a procedure to measure ABS efficiency is presented. The development and implementation of electronic stability control and associated safety systems on passenger cars and commercial vehicles, such as advanced emergency braking systems, brake assist (BAS), traction control (TCS), and roll stability control (RSC) are described and explained. Brake by wire (BBW) actuators and the ability to decouple the brake pedal from the hydraulic circuit are explained, and the advantages of e-booster technology as a replacement for the vacuum booster are described. The principles and technologies of regenerative braking are presented, and the continuing need for friction brakes on road vehicles, especially for emergency braking, is explained. The advanced brake control systems necessary for regenerative braking are described, and the importance of seamlessly blending friction and regenerative braking is explained. Driver interfaces with electronic braking are described with examples of visual and audible warning signals. The future of electronic braking safety systems and regenerative braking is considered throughout in the context of current and evolving legislation relating to brake intervention, automatically commanded braking, and ultimately autonomous braking." @default.
