- W4220944488 abstract "Formerly known as the reticuloendothelial system, the mononuclear phagocyte system is composed of blood, bone marrow, and tissue-derived monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), and osteoclasts. Once released into circulation, monocytes have a half-life of 1–2 days, after which time, they migrate into various tissues, where they differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells. Monocyte reservoirs exist within the bone marrow and spleen, specifically within the subcapsular red pulp. Although monocytopenia is generally not considered to be of clinical significance, it can be observed secondary to a variety of infectious and non-infectious disorders (i.e., estrogen toxicity, chemotherapy). Malignant proliferation of macrophages can be difficult to differentiate from reactive processes, particularly if the neoplastic population does not display overt criteria of malignancy." @default.
