- W4220971237 abstract "This chapter aims to provide an overview of the anthropology of reproduction, focusing on guiding themes, influential works, and new directions. It discusses the importance of reproduction as an analytic and ethnographic lens through which to study gender, class, and racial dynamics, the politics of states and households, and the tensions and overlaps between traditional and biomedical knowledge, to name just a few of the research directions in contemporary studies of reproduction. In the United States, the first ethnographies of reproduction were rooted in the feminist critique of the medicalization of pregnancy and birth. Family planning refers to the use of temporary or permanent contraceptives to space and/or limit the number of pregnancies and births. The anthropology of reproduction has also expanded to encompass reproductive disruptions that challenge the assumed connection between sexual activity and childbirth. The anthropology of reproduction is heavily weighted toward analyses of the experiences of heterosexual cisgender women." @default.
