- W4220996576 abstract "A 41-year-old man with AIDS presented to the emergency department with a 10-day history of fever and right upper abdominal pain. His blood pressure was 118/88 mm Hg, pulse rate was 138 beats/min, and temperature was 39 °C (102.2 °F). The WBC count was 18,000/μL, and transaminase levels were normal. Point-of-care ultrasonography of the abdomen (Figure A) was performed, and diagnosis was confirmed using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (Figure B). Amoebic liver abscess. Indirect hemagglutination test for antiamoebic antibodies yielded a positive result, with a titer of 1:2,048. The patient was treated with intravenous metronidazole and oral paromomycin and had completely improved at 3-month follow-up. Amoebic liver abscess is caused by Entamoeba histolytica infection and causes fever and right upper quadrant pain.1Haque R. Huston C.D.
