- W4221009617 abstract "The synthesis of highly-crystalline/highly-oriented graphite films from organic films by heat treatment at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere under atmospheric pressure is reviewed. Four precursors, poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), poly(p-phenylene 1,3,4-oxadiazole) (POD), polyimides (PIs), and benzimidazobenzophenanthroline ladder polymer (BBL), provide high-quality graphite films by heat treatment at a temperature above 2,800 °C under normal pressure. The carbonization and graphitization processes of each precursor are summarized. The crystallinity and preferred orientation of the graphite layers parallel to the film surface are discussed as functions of heat treatment temperature, precursor film thickness, and structure of the repeat unit. For three precursors (POD, PIs, and BBL) nitrogen retention is commonly observed in the carbonized films up to temperatures of approximately 2,000–2,500 °C, which might be important for the growth of graphite layers, resulting in the high crystallinity and high orientation of the graphite films." @default.
